Formica oeningensis was named by Heer (1849) [As Formica obesa oeningensis]. It is an impression.

It was recombined as Camponotus oeningensis by Cockerell (1915), Bolton (2012); it was recombined as Camponotites oeningensis by Boudinot et al. (2024).
