Raphiophorus was named by Angelin (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-l S Ludl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066,1075].

It was assigned to Raphiophorinae by Fortey (1975); to Raphiophoridae by Harrington and Leanza (1957), Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
