Taxonomy
Plecia cairnesi was named by Rice (1959). Its type specimen is GSC 14432, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Driftwood Canyon, east side 1.45 miles from schoolhouse, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine shale in Canada.
