Taxonomy
Cixius was named by Latreille (1804). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cixiidae, Cixiini, Cixiinae.

It was assigned to Cixiinae by Scudder (1878), Scudder (1890) and Statz (1950); to Cixiidae by Szwedo et al. (2004); and to Cixiini by Li et al. (2017), Dmitriev (2020) and Borodin and Borodina (2021).
