Cixius was named by Latreille (1804). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cixiidae, Cixiini, Cixiinae.
It was assigned to Cixiinae by Scudder (1878), Scudder (1890), Statz (1950); to Cixiidae by Szwedo et al. (2004); and to Cixiini by Li et al. (2017), Dmitriev (2020), Borodin and Borodina (2021), Luo et al. (2025).
