Pentatoma was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pentatomidae, Pentatominae, Pentatomoidea, Pentatomini.

It was assigned to Cimicides by Latreille (1802); to Pentatomidae by Förster (1891); and to Pentatomini by Rider (2006).
