Onchopeltis was named by Rasetti (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Fran Sepkoski's reference number: 1,494]. It is not extant. Its type is Onchopeltis spectabilis.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Elviniidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
