Protemnites was named by Whitehouse (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 16]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Elviniidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterocephaliidae by Paterson and Laurie (2004).
