Cenocimbex was named by Nel (2004). Its type is Cenocimbex menatensis. It is the type genus of Cenocimbicinae.

It was assigned to Cimbicinae by Nel (2004), Taeger et al. (2010); and to Cenocimbicinae by Archibald and Rasnitsyn (2023).

A. Nel 2004Cimbicid wasp characterized by the combination of the following characters: labrum not greatly widened and/or elongate; head not greatly enlarged behind eyes; broad clypeus; first abdominal tergite with hind margin weakly emarginated; in fore wing, a short vein ‘a’ separating cells [lA] and [2A] in fore wing, in a rather distal position; vein 2r-m strongly curved in fore wing; pterostigma broad.
