Solenopleura was named by Angelin (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Calymene holometopa.

It was reranked as Ptychoparia (Solenopleura) by Walcott (1884).

It was assigned to Ptychoparia by Walcott (1884); to Solenopleurinae by Bruton and Harper (2000); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Solenopleuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
