Taxonomy

Aulacopleura was named by Hawle and Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1106]. It is the type genus of Aulacopleuridae.

It was reranked as Otarion (Aulacopleura) by Thomas and Owens (1978).

It was assigned to Otarion by Thomas and Owens (1978); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aulacopleuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002), Zhou and Zhou (2019).
