Aphis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aphididae, Aphidoidea, Aphidinae, Aphidini, Aphidina.

It was assigned to Proboscidea by Scopoli (1763); to Gymnoptera by Schaeffer (1766); to Ryngota by Fabricius (1775); to Hemiptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Geoffroy (1762), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Aphidii by Latreille (1802); to Aphididae by Heer (1853); and to Aphidina by Kim et al. (2011).
