Acaste was named by Goldfuss (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m D Sieg Sepkoski's reference number: 1106].

It was reranked as Phacops (Acaste) by Salter (1864).

It was assigned to Phacops by Salter (1864); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acastidae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Edgecombe (2007).
