Brongniartella was named by Reed (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-l S Ldov-l Sepkoski's reference number: 378,795].

It was reranked as Homalonotus (Brongniartella) by Hoek (1912).

It was assigned to Homalonotus by Hoek (1912); to Homalonotidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Homalonotinae by Thomas (1977) and Congreve and Lieberman (2008).
