Calymene was named by Brongniart (1822). Its type is Phacops latifrons.
It was assigned to Asaphinae by M'Coy (1849); to Trilobita by Pellizzari (1913); to Calymenidae by Raymond (1916), Warburg (1925) and Shirley (1936); to Calymeninae by Adrain et al. (1995) and Adrain and Edgecombe (1997); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
