Taxonomy
Meliponorytes sicula was named by Tosi (1896). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Sicilian amber (Bologna coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Italy.

It was recombined as Trigona sicula by Zeuner and Manning (1976).
