Turgonalus cooperi was named by Rasnitsyn and Jarzembowski (1998). Its type specimen is BMB 016385/6, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Rudgwick Brickworks, Upper Weald Clay, which is in a Barremian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the Weald Clay Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Turgonaliscus cooperi by Engel (2016).
