Protoencrinurella was named by Legg (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 565]. It is not extant. Its type is Protoencrinurella maitlandi.

It was assigned to Pliomeridae by Legg (1976); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
