Tesselacauda was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Tesselacauda depressa.

It was assigned to Pliomeridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pilekiinae by Perez-Peris et al. (2021).
