Genaphis was named by Handlirsch (1907). Its type is Aphis valdensis. It is the type genus of Genaphidae, Genaphidoidea.

It was assigned to Genaphidae by Handlirsch (1907) and Favret (2012); and to Genaphididae by Heie and Wegierek (2011) and Żyła et al. (2014).
