Actaea was named by De Haan (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Actaeinae.
It was assigned to Xanthinae by Dana (1851); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1935), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); and to Actaeinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2021).
