Mycteria was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type is Mycteria americana. It is the type genus of Mycterinae.
It was assigned to Mycteriinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956); and to Ciconiidae by Howard (1972), Olson (1991), Louchart et al. (2008), Clements et al. (2017), May (2019).
