Ectatomma was named by Smith (1858). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ectatommini, Ectatomminae.

It was assigned to Ectatomminae by Dlussky and Wedmann (2012); and to Ectatommini by Wheeler (1915), Bolton (2003), Bolton (2012), Camacho et al. (2022).
