Lagothrix canus was named by Geoffroy (1812). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lagothrix lagothricha cana by Fooden (1963); it was corrected as Lagothrix cana by Pocock (1925), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Burgin et al. (2018).
