Sterrhopterix pristinella was named by Rebel (1934). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber (Bachofen-Echt collection), which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Psychites pristinellus by Sohn et al. (2012).
