Macacus gelada was named by Rüppell (1835). It is extant.

It was recombined as Theropithecus gelada by Geoffroy (1843), Allen (1925), Dandelot and Prévost (1972).

Synonyms
  • Gelada ruppellii was named by Gray (1843) [u spelt with an umlaut by Gray]. It is extant.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Theropithecus gelada by Allen (1925).
