Pterophorus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pterophoroidea, Pterophoridae.

It was assigned to Insecta by Geoffroy (1762); to Glossata by Fabricius (1775); to Lepidoptera by Schaeffer (1766), Latreille (1796); and to Pterophoridae by Sohn et al. (2012).
