Antilope strepsiceros was named by Pallas (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Strepsiceros strepsiceros by Heller (1913); it was recombined as Tragelaphus strepsiceros by Peters (1990), Hassanin and Douzery (1999) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008).
