Taxonomy
Apis meliponoides was named by von Buttel-Reepen (1906) [Neotype designated by Engel, 2001]. Its type specimen is AMNH B-JH 97, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic amber, Konigsberg collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Electrapis meliponoides by Cockerell (1908), Cockerell (1909), Spahr (1987) and Engel (2001); it was recombined as Electrapis (Electrapis) meliponoides by Zeuner and Manning (1976) and Engel (2021).
