Taxonomy
Apis proava was named by Menge (1856). Its type specimen is BMNH In. 18757, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Danziger Naturkundemuseum Menge collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in Poland.

It was recombined as Electrapis (Roussyana) proava by Zeuner and Manning (1976), Wille (1977); it was recombined as Electrapis proava by Spahr (1987); it was recombined as Electrapis (Melikertes) proava by Engel (1999); it was recombined as Melikertes proavus by Engel (2001); it was recombined as Melikertes (Melikertes) proavus by Engel (2021).
