Cercopis jurassica was named by Geinitz (1884). It is an impression. Its type locality is Dobbertin, Mecklenburg (Greifswald collection), which is in a Toarcian offshore claystone in Germany.
It was recombined as Procercopis jurassica by Handlirsch (1906), Evans (1956), Chen et al. (2020).
