Taxonomy
Mycetophaetus intermedius was named by Scudder (1892). Its type specimen is MCZ 3986, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (MCZ Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado. It is the type species of Mycetophaetus.
It was recombined as Plecia intermedia by Rice (1959); it was recombined as Penthetria intermedia by Fitzgerald (1999).
