Cyphomyrmex maya was named by de Andrade (2003). Its type specimen is Poinar H-10-223, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Mexican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
