Vinella was named by Ulrich (1890). Its type is Vinella repens. It is the type genus of Vinellidae.
It was assigned to Ctenostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Vinellidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953) and Bock (2006).
