Necrotaulius maior was named by Handlirsch (1906). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Dobbertin, Mecklenburg (Greifswald collection), which is in a Toarcian offshore claystone in Germany.
It was recombined as Liadotaulius maior by Ansorge (2002), Ansorge (2003).
