Pontocyprididae was named by Mueller (1894). It is extant. It is the type family of Pontocypridoidea.

It was reranked as the subfamily Pontocyprididae by Bertels (1968); it was reranked as the subfamily Pontocypridinae by Hazel and Holden (1971).

It was assigned to Cyprididae by Bertels (1968), Hazel and Holden (1971); to Podocopa by Carreño and Cronin (1993); to Cypridacea by Harloff and Jäger (1994); to Cypridoidea by Bergue and Govindan (2010); and to Pontocypridoidea by Liebau (2005), Babinot and Colin (2011), Forel (2017).
