Phalaena (Noctua) was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type subgenus of Noctuoidea, Noctuidae.

It was reranked as Noctua by Fabricius (1775), Latreille (1796), Fabricius (1798), Latreille (1802) and Sohn et al. (2012).
