Taxonomy

Thrips was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Thripidae, Thripinae.

It was assigned to Proboscidea by Scopoli (1763); to Gymnoptera by Schaeffer (1766); to Ryngota by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Müller (1776); to Hemiptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Latreille (1796); to Aphidii by Latreille (1802); to Thripidae by Handlirsch (1907); and to Thripinae by Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).

Synonyms

Achaetothrips was named by Karny (1908). It is extant. Its type is Archaeothrips latipennis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Thrips by Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).
