Taxonomy
Pseudaelurus africanus was named by Andrews (1914). Its type specimen is BMNH M. 10634, a partial skull (Facial region of skull, the maxillae with all dental alveoli and P3+4 present), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Karungu, which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Kenya.
It was recombined as Metailurus africanus by Savage (1965); it was recombined as Afrosmilus africanus by Schmidt-Kittler (1987), Anyonge (1991), Morales et al. (2008).
