Mycetophagini was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. Its type is Mycetophagus.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Mycetophaginae by Lawrence et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Mycetophaginae by Bouchard et al. (2011), Háva (2022), Legalov and Perkovsky (2024), Legalov and Perkovsky (2025).
