Ptyelus was named by Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau and Audinet-Serville (1828). It is extant.

It was reranked as Aphrophora (Ptyela) by Germar (1833), Germar and Berendt (1856).

It was assigned to Aphrophora by Germar (1833), Germar and Berendt (1856); to Cercopidae by Theobald (1937); and to Ptyelini by Cryan and Svenson (2010), Hamilton (2012).
