Bibio giganteus

Taxonomy

Bibio giganteus was named by Unger (1841). Its type specimen is SLJG 77605, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Radoboj (Grätz Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.

Synonyms

Plecia heroica was named by von Heyden and von Heyden (1865). Its type specimen is NHMUK In 58802, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Krantz Bonn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large shale in the Rott Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Bibio heroica by Evenhuis (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Bibio giganteus by Skartveit and Wedmann (2021).
Bibio partschii was named by Heer (1849). Its type specimen is NHMW 2007z013010001, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Radoboj (NHMW Wien Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.

It was recombined as Penthetria partschi by Pongrácz (1928); it was synonymized subjectively with Bibio giganteus by Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
Bibio maculatus was named by Heer (1849). It is a compression fossil.
