Taxonomy
Plectothyrella was named by Temple (1965). Its type is Plectothyrella platystrophoides.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rostricellulinae by Williams et al. (2002), Hints and Harper (2015).
