Shelopuga similis was named by Popov (1988). Its type specimen is PIN 3924/11, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Shiviya locality (PIN collection 3924), which is in a Hauterivian terrestrial siliciclastic in the Daya Formation of the Russian Federation.
