Aphelopus was named by Dalman (1823). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aphelopinae.
It was assigned to Dryininae by Ashmead (1893) and Kieffer (1905); and to Aphelopinae by Olmi (1998), Olmi (2000), Olmi and Bechly (2001), Olmi and Virla (2014) and Tribull (2015).
