Permithonopsis obscura was named by Martynova (1952). Its type specimen is PIN 94/173, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Soyana (Iva Gora, PIN collection 94), which is in a Roadian lagoonal siliciclastic in the Russian Federation.
