Taxonomy
Plecia castellaroi was named by Gentilini (1991). Its type specimen is MTR 1236, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Monte Castellaro (MTR collection), which is in a Messinian lagoonal marl in the Gessoso-solfifera Formation of Italy.
