Taxonomy
Thamnotropis rarus was named by Melnikova and Bychkov (1986). Its type locality is Kenkeren Ridge, Koryak, which is in a Sevatian reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks in the Nutekin Formation of the Russian Federation.

It was recombined as Thamnasteriamorpha rara by Kiessling (2014).
