Taxonomy
Astrea defranciana was named by Michelin (1841). Its type specimen is lectotype MNHN.F.M00026, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Synastrea defranciana by d'Orbigny (1850); it was misspelled as Thamnastraea defranceana by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was synonymized subjectively with Thamnasteria defrancei by Wullschleger (1966).
