Taxonomy
Spongodiscus was named by Ehrenberg (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. Its type is Spongodiscus resurgens. It is the type genus of Spongodiscidae.

It was assigned to Spongodiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
