Gymnostoma antiquum was named by Scriven and Hill (1995) [Type Locality: Lake Bungarby, (36°09'S, 149°08'E), south-eastern New South Wales, Australia.
Specimens examined: LB 83B, LB 124B, LB 159, LB 242-243, LB 247-248, LB 261-262, LB 266.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: LB 271 / LB 272 (counterpart), infructescence, housed in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a seed/fruit (infructescence). Its type locality is Lake Bungarby, which is in a Paleocene terrestrial mudstone in Australia.
